Course Content

Yoga is a system of physical, mental and spiritual development, the benefits of which are now recognised by millions worldwide. The word 'Yoga' means to 'unite' or to 'join', precisely because it harmonises and integrates all the levels of our multi-dimensional being, so that we realise our deepest potential and 'wholeness', health in the deepest sense of the word. Yoga is the oldest system of self-development in the world and is the birthright of each and every one of us.

The Yoga Therapy & Training Centre (YTTC) was established in 1996 to meet the increasing demand for professional Yoga training, and is now Ireland's largest and fastest growing professional Yoga training body. In the short time since its establishment, demand for training courses has increased and are now available in Cork, Dublin, Galway, L'Derry, Lisburn, France and Spain.

With international recognition, the YTTC is a Yoga Alliance registered school, and is a member of The International Yoga Federation and the British Council for Yoga Therapy. The organisation has gained a reputation for quality and excellence in teaching.

This highly recognised Yoga qualification has to date been awarded to over 1500 students enabling them to teach Yoga at a professional level.

Aims & Objectives

The Aims of the First Stages Teacher Training Diploma Course are:

1. To provide the foundation on which trainee teachers can develop and evolve their physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

2. To build on the trainee teacher's knowledge of Yoga.

3. To provide trainee teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitude to teach Yoga safely, confidently and professionally.

4. To produce Yoga Teachers who by taking responsibility for their own physical, mental and spiritual health are true ambassadors of the ancient system of Yoga.

Accreditation & Hours

The course follows the Yoga Alliance syllabus and specifications utilising the most contemporary methods and practice, while keeping close to the classical structures set down in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

The course comprises of 200 hours, 180 of which are Tutor Contact hours; Home Assignments cover the remaining 20 hours. The course duration is 21 days run over 23 days.

There are no special entry requirements but a basic knowledge of yoga postures is helpful. A good measure of self-motivation is required for all aspects of the course and a genuine desire to learn and grow from the teachings of yoga.

Trainee Teachers are required to attend all tutorials and are expected to arrive 10 minutes before the start of each training day. Punctuality and commitment are expected throughout the course, and in keeping with the ethos of Yoga Philosophy, Trainee Teachers will be expected to show awareness both on and off the mat.

Any training days that are missed must be made up by attendance at other suitable seminars, at the discretion of the course tutors. Assignments are given throughout the course and are designed to equip the Trainee Teacher with the necessary skills to enable them to teach safely and with confidence.

Teaching practice will take place throughout the course and Trainee Teachers are encouraged to make informal arrangements with family and friends to teach beginner classes in order to gain valuable extra teaching practice.

As well as providing each student with the necessary skills for teaching Yoga, the course gives an excellent opportunity for personal development and growth.

Finally, we want you to enjoy the course, the YTTC delivers all its courses in a relaxed and supportive environment. Our tutors are all approachable and available at all times to give advice and support. It is hoped that you will make many new friends on the course. Feedback from former students tells us that even if you choose not to teach, the course is a valuable and life-changing experience.

Our Mentoring System

It is our intention to support our students to the best of our ability and our mentoring systems is designed for that purpose.

Once our students qualify they are welcome to attain aditional days on the level one course at no extra cost. It is an open offer to all students to avail of the mentoring system, it is not obligatory.

Normally how this works is when the newly qualified teacher goes out and teaches some yoga classes then returns for some extras days to receive feedback on their progress and ask any questions that might arise.

There are elements of the course that take time for the beginner teachers to incorporate in order to teach in their classes and the mentoring system is a great way to refresh your understanding for the best benefit of your students.

There is no time limit on the mentoring system.

Posture (Asana)

Our system of training has three phases and layers all the different aspects of yoga together to encompass the full system of Hatha Yoga.

Phases 1:

In the first phase of the course we focus on alignment(similiar to Iyengar yoga focus) and stability working from the outside in.

Phases 2:

In the second phase of the course we develop the intermediate practice and move deeper into the body and inner alignment by introducing the ujjayi and locks in asana practice and teaching.(similar to Asthanga yoga focus)

Yoga Nidra becomes more important at this stage, as we hold the postures longer with less effort (Yoga Nidra/Relaxation) and more subtle adjustment with Pranayama (Breathing). Simply put, the longer we hold the posture the less effort we put in and the more energy we get in return. This is called Vitality.

Phase 3:

The third phase of the course focuses on moving from the inside out, moving from our centre. The balance of effort and no effort. layering mindfulness meditation into posture practice and moving in the flow state.(similar to vinyasa yoga flow focus)

Finding our true center, at the physical level this is called the "Natural Integraty of the Body"

Breath awareness naturally evolves to the three phrases of the breath, to the full yogic breathing.(The Stability Yoga Practice)

As the practice develops, we open to greater energy levels by activating the core and inwardly yielding, the full yogic breath becomes the ujjayi breath. (The Core & Flow Yoga Practice)
